SURREAL giant koalas, a tram with wings, aerial ballerinas and a performing duck took centre stage as the 18th Commonwealth Games opened in Melbourne yesterday.
Almost 81,000 people watched the light-hearted two-hour opening ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the 18th edition of the 11-day event involving 4,500 athletes.
