MALACCA: Hosts Malacca led on three occasions but still found themselves on the losing end when they were edged 4-3 by Penang on the second day of the Coca-Cola Cup Under-16 football tournament here yesterday.
Penangs star was striker Hairul Azri Jamal Haziq who notched a hat-trick to help the islanders claim full points in their first match of the tournament.
But it was Malacca who drew first blood through Mohd Israf Ishak in the fifth minute.
Hairul equalised on the half-hour mark but the local boys restored their lead through Mohd Naim Rozali in the 42nd minute.
Penang were soon back on level terms when Hairul scored his second in the 57th minute.
Malacca charged back and stormed ahead for the third time just four minutes later through Mohd Sahfirin Ahmad. Hairul then completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute.
Just when the match seemed headed for a draw, Mohd Firdaus Abdul Rahman provided the winner in the 72nd minute to help Penang seal victory.
Penang have now booked their place in the second round.
With only three teams in Group C, they can afford to lose their final match to Perak today.
In another match played at the Henry Gurney school ground, Sarawak edged Selangor 2-1 in a Group A encounter.
Sufizal Ismail (42nd) and Azizan Saperi (56th) scored for Sarawak while Khairul Azry Abdul Rahman replied in the 53rd minute.
Khairul scored twice yesterday to help Selangor beat reigning champions Kedah in their opening game.
