MALACCA: Selangor got off to a storming start in the Coca-Cola Cup Under-16 football tournament when they stunned holders Kedah 2-0 in a Group A match at the Yayasan Saad Padang here yesterday.
Selangor collected full points thanks to a double blast from striker Khairul Azry Abdul Rahman who scored in the sixth and 66th minutes. The win has virtually sealed Selangor’s place in the second round.
Kedah can still make the second round provided they defeat Sarawak in their final preliminary round match tomorrow.
Kuala Lumpur, last year’s runners-up, also scored a smashing opening win when they defeated Kelantan 3-1 in a Group B tie. Ahmad Jihad Ismail got his name on the scoresheet after only eight minutes before Mohd Redzuan Mohd Jamal doubled it in the 19th minute.
Kelantan pulled one back through Mohd Hazman Abd Karim in the 29th minute but KL’s Mohd Izham Abu Bakar put his team back in the comfort zone in the 50th minute.
Group B: Kelantan 1 Kuala Lumpur 3, Terengganu 1 Perlis 2.
Group C: Malacca 1 Perak 1.
