KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran tennis player V. Selvam proved that he is still the best player in the country after winning the national hard court championship singles and doubles titles at the National Tennis Centre in Jalan Duta here on Sunday.

Selvam, who turns 36 tomorrow, easily brushed aside Abdul Hazli Zainuddin 6-0, 6-0 to win the singles title for the fifth time since the inaugural tournament in 2000. He was the runner-up to Danio Yahya in 2003.

In the doubles, Selvam partnered B. Kanarajah to beat Abdul Hazli-Adam Jaya 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.

“I hope I don’t sound too big-headed but I feel I was simply too good for my opponent,” said Selvam referring to the single final.

“I played close to flawless tennis and my opponent did not have any answer to my shots.”
