Penang’s Hock Lai still in the running for a semi-final spot

JOHOR BARU: North Zone champion Lee Hock Lai of Penang remains in contention for a place in the semi-finals of the 100PLUS POWER National Junior Badminton Circuit Grand Finals when he defeated Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) shuttler Loo Yik Xiang at the Johor BA Hall in Larkin yesterday. 

Hock Lai, who lost his opening Group B match to Sabah ’s Beryno Wong on Sunday, recovered to defeat Loo Yik Xiang of BJSS 17-16, 15-8. 

He needs to beat another BJSS shuttler Chong Wei Feng in his final group match today to stand a chance to move into the semi-finals. 

In Group A, Liew Daren defeated South Zone champion Muhd Redza Hassan of Johor 15-7, 15-7 while Chong Li Qun sank Penang ’s Chang Hun Pin, 17-15, 15-4.  

With two wins apiece, Daren and Li Qun, who will face each other today to decide the group winner, have taken up the two top slots in Group A. 

In the Under-18 girls’ singles category, BJSS players, Julia Wong Pei Xian and Goh Liu Ying advanced to the semi-finals after extending their winning streak for a second day in Group B.  

Julia defeated Kedah’s Yeoh Phaik Wei 11-2, 11-1 while Liu Ying took 70 minutes to down Perak S. Premalathi 9-11, 11-9, 11-9. 

In Group A, Yee Qui Hsiang of BJSS triumphed over Selangor’s S. Premalatha 11-2, 11-6 while Chong Sook Chin obtained a walkover against Perak’s Chow Kar Yuen. Both Qui Hsiang and Sook Chin are through to the next round.
