OSLO: A Manchester United fan has donated his autographed shirt by former striker Eric Cantona to the family of a Norwegian soccer fan who was murdered last week.
Terje Mjaaland, 23, was killed in a random stabbing spree on a city tram in Oslo last Tuesday. He was an avid United supporter, and his main idol was Cantona.
When the Scandinavian Manchester United Supporters Club heard about the story, it immediately got involved to get a hold of a signed shirt in honour of Mjaaland.
We posted a story on our website, and contacted Manchester United as well as the organisation Shareholders United for help, said Lars Morten Olsen of the Scandinavian Manchester United Supporters Club.
Autographed Cantona-shirts are rare in Norway, and we were pleasantly surprised when an anonymous supporter came forward to donate his shirt to Mjaaland, Olsen told news agency ANB.
Mjaaland's family said they are very grateful for the gift.
United last week posted a notice on their official website to mourn the loss of the Norwegian fan.
Manchester United were very sorry to learn of the sad and untimely death of their fan Terje Mjaaland, a very keen fan from Norway. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time, the statement read. AP
