SINGAPORE: Reigning Malaysia Cup champions Selangor MPPJ and the S- League All-Stars played out a 2-2 draw in the third edition of the Sultan of Selangor's Cup football tournament at the Singapore National Stadium here last night.
And instead of having a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners, the two teams were declared joint champions when the game ended in a draw at the end of regulation time.
They will share the S$25,000 prize money. It was the first time that there were joint winners in the tournament.
All-Stars' goals were scored by Shahril Ishak and Agu Casmir in the 15th and 35th minutes.
MPPJ replied through their Argentine imports Juan Manuel Arostegui and Fabricio Francesni in the 50th and 55th minutes respectively.
In the first Sultan of Selangor's Cup meet in 2001, the Selangor Selection defeated the S-League Selection 4-2 on penalties after the team drew 0-0 after regulation time.
In 2002, the meet was not held. Last year, Selangor Selection defeated the S-League Selection 4-1.
In last night's match, the All Stars team started off aggressively and dominated the proceedings for the first half in front of a bumper 40,000 crowd.
MPPJ's forwards Arostegui and Brenezac Sasa could not penetrate the All-Stars' tight defence. Furthermore, their other Argentine import, Bruno Sebastian Martelotto, had just returned from a one-month lay-off and was not at his best.
All-Stars opened the proceedings through the unmarked Shahril who powered in a left-footed shot off Casmir's pass in the 15th minute.
All-Stars went two goals up when Casmir, who plays for Young Lions in the S-League, scored in the 35th minute.
MPPJ goalkeeper Jamsari Sabian's poor clearance of All-Stars' Zulkarnean Zainal freekick was picked up by Casmir who easily scored with a left footed kick.
In the second half it was MPPJ who were the aggressors and they managed to reduce the deficit in the 50th minute through a long shot from their top striker Arostegui.
And five minutes later Francesni made it 2-2 with the equaliser for MPPJ.
He scored with a right footed kick after latching on to Materlotto's freekick.
Meanwhile, in a curtain raiser between the veterans of Selangor and the Singapore, the former won 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the game ended 3-3 in regulation time.
Singapore scored through S. Rajagopal in the first minute, Fandi Ahmad (9th) and Quah Kim Song (50th).
Selangor replied with a brace from Soh Chin Aun in the fifth and 20th minute while K. Rajagopal converted a penalty for the Selangor team in the 43rd minute.
