Short Putts

KO Conteh

BRITAIN'S former world light-heavyweight champion John Conteh returned to action at The Open, but he suffered a quick knock-out as his son James failed to make it through the qualifiers.

Conteh senior was caddying for his 25-year-old son who turned pro eight months ago.

The father-and-son act packed their bags after a 73 and 80 left junior 13 shots short of making it through.

Last man

TIGER Woods was taken aback when told by journalists that he had been fixed up to play a benefit match for SARS victims partnering women's world No 1 Anikka Sorenstam against Canadian pair Mike Weir and Lori Kane.

“It's the first time I've heard about it,” he shot back when told it had been reported in Toronto newspapers.

Canada was the worst hit region after China during the recent SARS outbreak and especially around Toronto.

Beam & beer

USPGA winner Rich Beam is known for his love of a beer or two and he says he is now developing a taste for the British variety.

“The beer is a little warm, but it's not bad,” he said.

“The first one goes down a little stiff, because its darker beer than Coors which is 90 per cent water. But after that it's quite good.”

Cup gossip

THE British Open is the top focus here this week, but talk of the Ryder Cup is never far from the surface.

Gossip this week revolved around who would take over from Sam Torrance as European captain.

Sandy Lyle said his name was “in the pot” while Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam are expected to add their names to the list.

The Europe Ryder Cup board have put off any decision until the eve of the start of qualification at the end of next month.

Woosie's woes

PINT-sized Ian Woosnam did his hopes of captaining the next European Ryder Cup team no good recently when he was involved in a bust-up in a Jersey pub, according to British tabloids.

After downing a few, Woosie belted out his version of the old Tom Jones favourite “Delilah” and then all hell broke loose after a friend approached the girlfriend of another customer.

The Welshman was described as effing and blinding and punching and kicking.

He later apologised for his outburst, the reports said. – AFP
