Tzer Jin aims to win points in fifth and sixth round in Johor

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Chin Tzer Jin will make a bid to get among the points in the fifth and sixth round of the Formula BMW Asia series at the Johor Circuit in Pasir Gudang this weekend.

The 19-year-old Tzer Jin is the third driver in Team Meritus. The other two, Ho Pin Tung of Hong Kong and Hanse Lin of Taiwan, are enjoying a great season in the championship, which is part of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS).

Tzer Jin hopes that he will be able to rise to the occasion this time.

“I’m really looking forward to the next rounds. The team have been great and I want to repay them and my home crowd by doing well,” said Tzer Jin.

Billed as the region’s most exciting single-seater racing series, the field represents the region’s talent.

The series, which have two rounds in each venue of the event, got underway in March as support races for the Petronas F1 Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit. Pin Tung won both rounds convincingly.

At the same venue last month, he won Round 3 and Pin Tung lost his unbeaten run in the next race because of mechanical failure. Hanse went on to win Round 4.

On his challenges in Pasir Gudang, Pin Tung said: “I know there are many good drivers in the field. As the series progresses and the teams and drivers become more familiar with the cars, I know it’s going to get tougher to keep winning races.”

Adding glamour as well as talent to the series is Indian movie star Ajit Kumar. Despite a difficult start, he will be out to prove a point at the Pasir Gudang.

With a large and enthusiastic Indian following in Johor, fans will have the opportunity to catch their hero in action together with his Team India Racing teammate, the 20-year-old Rajvirdhan Vijayakumar.

The Formula BMW Asia races feature drivers from Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and India.

Five of them are recipients of Formula BMW scholarships, which provide them with financial assistance and training throughout the season.
