LONDON: Portsmouth restored their five-point lead at the top of the English First Division with a 4-0 win at Coventry on Wednesday while Nottingham Forest strengthened their grip on a playoff place with a 3-0 home win over Derby County.
Portsmouth have 82 points with Leicester, who won 2-1 at Burnley on Tuesday, second on 77. Sheffield United are third on 65, Reading fourth on 64 with Forest in fifth on 62. Wolves fill the final play-off spot on 60 points.
Portsmouth took the lead with a Gary Caldwell own goal after 14 minutes and doubled it with a shot by midfielder Steve Stone three minutes later. Kevin Harper made it 3-0 after 23 minutes.
Paul Merson completed the rout with the fourth goal after 68 minutes to cap a great night for the Hampshire club.
Forest took charge of their game with two goals in two minutes in the first half.
Marlon Harewood headed the opener after 13 minutes and Darren Huckerby headed the second two minutes later. Harewood scored from the penalty spot four minutes into the second half after a handball by Steve Elliott. Reuters
