SUNDERLAND: Former Ireland coach Mick McCarthy returned to club football after a six year hiatus here yesterday when he was named manager of relegation threatened Premiership outfit Sunderland.
The 44-year-old becomes Sunderland's third manager of the season and replaces Howard Wilkinson, who was sacked along with assistant Steve Cotterill on Monday after just five months as they failed to revive the side's fortunes which saw them win just twice in the Premiership under them.
