IPOH: It was a blessing for Anderson Xybase but a bane for Johor Sports Council when rain came during their Division One MHF-Milo-NSC- Admiral Junior Hockey League match at Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.
Anderson were leading 2-1 when heavy rain coupled with lightning came just before the start of the second half.
Match technical officials deliberated for more than 40 minutes but the rain still did not subside. They then decided, with the consent of officials from both teams, to abandon the game.
As play had gone on for more than 35 minutes, under the competition rules, the scoreline at the time the match was abandoned, stood. Thus Anderson was awarded the match with a 2-1 scoreline.
Earlier, Anderson were expected to steamroll past Johor Sports Council who were anchored at the bottom of the league table.
However, the unheralded visitors took the game to Anderson and could have even taken a stunning lead had their forwards converted the chances that came in the first 15 minutes of action.
After the slow start, Anderson clawed back into the game and went ahead in the 26th minute through their leading forward Fazreen Ekson Kulub Wahab who deflected a penalty corner attempt into goal.
Johor SC soon regrouped themselves to trouble their better known opponents. In the 31st minute their efforts paid off when Hang Edzharsyah Hang Tuah sounded the board from a penalty corner attempt.
But Anderson was quick to recover as in the very next minute they regained the lead at 2-1 with Hafifi Hafiz Hanafi bravely sprawling near the left post to slot in a short pass from the right by Fazreen.
Anderson then defended stoutly until the interval and the eventual abandonment of the tie.
