PETALING JAYA: Rally legend Karamjit Singh (pic) has entered another exclusive club – having his life story told on the big screen.
His remarkable journey is now being turned into a biopic titled Terbang, which is slated for release in conjunction with Merdeka later this year.
The film is directed by Chiu Keng Guan, the man behind box-office hits The Journey and Ola Bola.
Better known as the ‘’Flying Sikh’’, Karamjit remains the first Malaysian and Asian to win a world rally title, capturing the FIA Production Car World Championship crown in 2002.
He also boasts multiple titles in the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, cementing his status as one of the country’s greatest motorsport figures.
A teaser for the film was released on Monday, offering a first glimpse into the life of one of Malaysia’s sporting icons.
While many await the movie, life goes on for the 64-year-old Karamjit, who has been active in rallying since 1994.
“I’ll continue driving as long as I can still win races,” said Karamjit, who won the Malaysian rally championship last year in Bahau and Jempol.
“The race will be in June this year and I will drive as long as my car is ready.”
And if all goes well, Karamjit may take part in his first overseas race in four years.
“I’ve received an offer to drive a new Mitsubishi car at the Rally of New Caledonia in May and I’ve to confirm my participation by end of this month.
“It’s a new car costing more than a million ringgit and I’m honoured the team want me to drive.
“Normally, a driver has to pay to drive, especially a brand new car but they are only asking me to pay my own flight tickets and the travel for my mechanics.
“Hopefully, I can find sponsors to cover the flight cost as it is not cheap given the current situation.
“The last time I raced overseas was in 2022 when I took part in three rally races in India and won all of them.”
