Boon Siew Honda’s Zaqhwan a class above on his new bike

Speed master: Zaqhwan Zaidi celebrates on the podium after winning the overall title in the Malaysian Superbike Championship 1000 class.

PETALING JAYA: Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi ruled the Malaysian Superbike Championship (MSBK) 1000 by making a clean sweep of all races in Round Three en route to winning the overall title.

Zaqhwan was truly unstoppable over the weekend with his new Honda CBR1000 RRR SP machine as he rightfully earned the coveted Shogun trophy.

Yesterday, he endured a tough battle against Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin to win Race Two at the Sepang International Circuit by posting a time of 21:30.721 while Kasma finished a close second in 21:31.313.

But Zaqhwan made it look easy in Race Three when he capped off a successful win with a lights-to-flag victory with a time of 21:27.869s, 4.2 seconds ahead of the rest of the grid.

“I am so thrilled and pleased with the outcome this weekend. Finally, I’ve won the overall title with the new bike,” said Zaqhwan, who won Race One on Saturday.

The new bike was slated to be Zaqhwan’s ride in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship but with the event cancelled due to the pandemic, this was the first time the Honda rider had the chance to be competitive on the bike.

“We got some excellent mileage with the bike this weekend. Kudos to my team for their superb engineering in getting the bike in race shape within a record time. I can’t wait to race this bike in the ARRC next year because I believe that this will make me super competitive.”

Ibrahim Norrodin was on song in the MSBK 600 category when he picked up his hattrick of wins over the weekend. The SIC Racing Team rider won both Race Two and Race Three.

However, it was Ibrahim’s teammate Mohd Syarifuddin Azman who had the most to celebrate.

Despite not winning a single race throughout the two rounds in 2021, Syarifuddin’s play-it-safe strategy paid off when he took the title with 105 points.

Syarifuddin finished on the podium in five out of six races. The only race where he was absent from the podium was the final race of the season. He crossed the finish line in fourth.

Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider Mohd Izam Ikmal won the MSBK 250 title,
