PETALING JAYA: A brace from Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal set the tone for Malaysia’s emphatic win against Bangladesh at the Asian Champions Trophy.
The 27-year-old Azrai made his mark after firing the first two goals in Malaysia’s 6-1 thrashing of Bangladesh in their third group stage match at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Punjab, on Friday (Oct 30).
Competing at his third edition of the tournament, Azrai first scored a field goal in the 14th minute before doubling the lead for Malaysia through a penalty corner conversion in the 22nd minute.
Bangladesh then replied with a goal from Amirul Islam, but there was no stopping the Speedy Tigers as Akhimullah Anuar Esook made it 3-1 before half-time.
Youngster Azimuddin Syakir Kamaruddin then extended the lead in the 32nd minute before Shello Silveries fired another just a minute later.
Malaysia’s final goal came with 10 minutes left on the clock and Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi converted a penalty corner to secure the three points.
The national team continued their perfect run at the tournament after beating China 5-4 on Tuesday before edging South Korea 3-1 on Thursday.
Head coach Brendon Carolan was proud of his team for delivering a strong result, commending their control of the game on the pitch against Bangladesh but sees room for improvement.
"It was a good performance from the team. After the first 15-20 minutes, we controlled the game really well," said Carolan.
"I think we did leave some goals out there. Bangladesh played some good games as well.
Malaysia now have a day to recover before facing hosts India on Sunday (Nov 1).
The two sides recently met at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games but India beat Malaysia to clinch gold and Olympic Games ticket with a 5-1 win earlier this month.
The national team will then play their final group stage match against Japan on Monday.
