PETALING JAYA: Defending champions Tenaga Nasional and their rivals Terengganu secured their berth in the TNB Cup final after taking contrasting routes at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Thursday (March 16).

Tenaga, after a 3-3 draw at the end of the regulation time, won the penalty shootout 3-0 in the second leg of the semi-finals to move into the final.

Both teams had drawn 2-2 in the first leg semi-final clash in Bukit Jalil on March 14.

In the deciding second leg yesterday, Maybank raced to a 3-0 lead through two penalty corner conversions from Razie Rahim (second and 22nd minutes) and field goal from Ashran Hamsani in the 42nd minute.

However, Tenaga rose from the dead in the last three minutes when Azril Misron scored through a field goal in the 57th minute while youngster Amirul Haniff Mamat’s penalty corner double in the 59th and 60th minutes saved the day for his side.

Maybank did not recover from the shock where Izham Azhar, Shahmie Irfan Suhaimi and Syawal Abdul Razak all missed the first three shootouts.

National players Firhan Ashaari, Shahril Saabah and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal converted their shootout to take Tenaga into the final.

However, there was no such drama for Terengganu as they overcame UiTM 3-1 to seal their final berth with a 8-2 aggregate.

Terengganu’s goals were scored by Jang Jong-hyun (14th), Shello Silverius (45th) and Faizal Saari (56th) while UiTM replied through Danial Asyraf Abdul Ghani.

The TNB Cup final will take place at the National Hockey Stadium this Saturday (March 18).
