Maybank’s Muhajir hopes to cash in on chance for Oz-some test

PETALING JAYA: The selection of Muhajir Abdul Rauf (pic) for the test match series against Australia did not come as a surprise.

The 22-year-old was a livewire for Maybank in the Malaysian Hockey League and scored six goals.

He was one of the 28 called up for the centralised national camp by coach A. Arulselvaraj but only 22 will be selected to play at the Perth Hockey Stadium from April 21-28.

Muhajir aims to earn his first international cap against the world’s No. 1 team.

“It will be nice to play against the side that my idol Jamie Dwyer used to play for. I grew up admiring him. He was my benchmark when I started my career as an athlete,” said the Sabahan.

“His skills and sharpness in the D-box is extraordinary. There are other top players too, and it will be nice to play against them.

“It will make me a better player but first, I need to prove my worth to coach Arul during training sessions.

“I’m trying to adapt quickly in the senior team.”

Malaysia last faced Australia in September 2018 and lost 2-5.
