Nor Azlan out to end Tenaga’s 10-year league title drought

PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional coach Nor Azlan Bakar (left) has urged his charges to avoid mistakes at all costs as the Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) will only be played in a one-round format this year.

Under this year’s MHL for both the men and women’s leagues, each team will play one match against all the others in a round-robin league style.

The team at the top of the table will emerge as champions, while the top four teams in the league will advance to the two-leg semi-finals of the TNB Cup.

With only seven matches to play in the eight-team field, Azlan has challenged his players not to drop any points and avoid mistakes.

“We want to fight for the title. We have to be consistent from game one to seven. All seven games, we must give our best. There is no room for mistakes, ” said Azlan, who is known for his no-nonsense approach when it comes to coaching.

“We know Tenaga have not won the league title for quite a while. We last won it in 2010, which is a long time. The last time we entered the TNB Cup final was in 2013. Since then, we have not done well.

“This is the best chance for Tenaga to win at least one trophy.”

The team will have ten national players in the squad namely Faiz Helmi Jali, Syed Mohd Syafiq Syed Cholan, Nik Mohd Aiman Nik Rozemi, Norsyafiq Sumantri, Mohd Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, Mohd Firhan Ashaari, Mohd Hairi Abdul Rahman, Mohd Aminuddin Mohd Zain, Mohd Shamir Rizmi Mohd Shamsul and Idris Samad.

All of them have joined the team for training, which started last week, expect for Aminuddin, Shamir and Shamsul.

“They have hamstring strains, so we are monitoring their fitness level and doing lots of recovery work with them, ” said Azlan.

“Our preparation has been going good. We are focusing on improving the fitness of the non-national players in the team.

“I want them to be on par with the national players. We don’t want any of them to lack the drive during matches. Also, I have told the national boys to guide these players.

“If this is done, then the synergy among them will work, and we’ll have a better chance of winning at least one trophy this season.”
