IF you want to send it miles down the fairway, think smooth, wide and powerful. The biggest hitters – from seasoned pros to the game’s rising stars – all follow the same fundamentals.
Here’s how to emulate them and really rip one off the tee.
1 Lower body forward
As the club swings back and out to the right (for right‑handers), feel your upper body lengthening upwards. The old idea of “staying behind the ball” can be misleading – instead, keep your head steady while your lower body drives forward. This creates the dynamic separation that fuels a powerful strike.
2 Hit it on the up
Launch angle is everything. To maximise distance and reduce spin, tee the ball slightly higher than usual so you catch it on the upswing. Ideally, you want the club meeting the ball 1° or 2° upward, after the swing arc has bottomed out. This is the secret to those towering, low‑spin drives.
3 Make a wide takeaway
A wide, low takeaway builds a strong coil without wasting energy. Keep the clubhead close to the turf for as long as possible and let the backswing stay smooth and unhurried. Save the speed for the moment of truth – impact.
4 Use the ground for power
Elite drivers of the ball use the ground as leverage. As you start the downswing, make a subtle squat to create resistance and load into the ground. From there, let the hips fire and release the stored energy. This move is the engine behind modern power hitting.
