At the takeaway, the shoulders should tilt away from the target
HITTING a fairway wood cleanly off the turf is one of golf’s most demanding tests of swing mechanics.
It calls for a controlled path and precise attack angle – and mastering it will strengthen your full swing technique across every club in the bag.
As many professionals emphasise, success with this shot depends on a sweeping, brushing action through impact.
That motion begins with sound fundamentals at address rather than any hand manipulation during the swing. Build those foundations, commit to the shot off the deck, and let the body do the work.
1 Shift the pelvis
At set up, feel the pelvis move slightly towards the target so the shoulders tilt away from it. This helps the trunk turn more freely in the backswing, creating a shallower swing arc driven by body rotation rather than hand action.
2 Control the clubhead
As the trunk rotates, the shoulders should be pointing away from the target before the club reaches parallel at the top. This position promotes speed while maintaining control of the clubhead – a key to consistent contact.
3 Forward shaft lean
Through impact, clear the left side of the body while keeping the head fractionally behind the ball. This encourages forward shaft lean and allows you to compress the ball cleanly, producing that crisp, sweeping strike.
