PGAM call Gavin's suspension after anti-doping breach unfortunate

Gavin Green

PETALING JAYA: Golfer Gavin Green’s three-month suspension has come as a shock to the Professional Golf Association of Malaysia (PGAM) and they described the situation as unfortunate following his breach of the European Tour anti-doping policy.

PGAM vice-president Chong Chee Ming said the association was surprised by the development after Green tested positive during a doping control at the Danish Championship in August, where he finished tied for 40th.

"We’re very surprised it happened, and of course, it’s very unfortunate," said Chee Ming.

"Who would have known that the herbal supplement he took contained that substance?

"It’s tough, but players need to be more aware of these things.”

On Tuesday, the European Tour confirmed in a statement that Green had breached its anti-doping regulations after taking a herbal supplement available in Asia as therapeutic treatment for an undisclosed medical condition.

Gavin has accepted the suspension and will be eligible to return to competition on March 5.

"Green has cooperated fully with the Tour throughout the process and accepted the suspension," read the European Tour statement.
