PETALING JAYA: Golfer Anson Yeo will be out to follow in the footsteps of Malaysian compatriot Jeneath Wong by earning a coveted ticket to Majors.
Anson is on a hot streak after four victories so far this year and he leads a seven-pronged Malaysian challenge to the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Dubai next month.
It will be his fourth appearance when he tees off at the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course from Oct 23-26.
Joining Anson in Dubai are Zia Iqmal Abdul Rashid, Hariz Hezri, Maverick Chua, Farez Azihan, Joshua Lim and Zubair Firdaus.
The champion secures a berth at the 2026 Masters Tournament and The Open (British Open), while the runner-up earns a spot in The Open Qualifying Series, offering another route to the year’s final Major.
“I’m excited to play in my fourth Asia-Pacific Amateur,” said 19-year-old, who is currently 240th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
“Playing in the Masters and The Open is every golfer’s dream. It will push me to work harder and do well in Dubai,” said Anson, who is also the reigning Malaysia Games (Sukma) individual gold medallist.
Earlier this year, Jeneath became the first Malaysian to win the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship in Vietnam, which earned her starts at the Chevron Championship, the Evian Championship and the Women’s British Open.
“Every year, I have been able to pick up new lessons, which has helped me grow as a golfer and build confidence.
“It not only gives us the chance to compete at the highest level but this will also motivate upcoming juniors.”
Anson added he is using his past experiences in the championship to improve on his career best 29th place finish, achieved at Thailand’s Amata Spring Country Club in 2022.
He subsequently finished 67th in Australia in 2023 and joint 47th in Japan last year.
