Retailer tees up for better environment

It took a concerted joint effort to sort the trash at Pantai Remis, but the job got done.

MST Golf, Malaysia’s leading golf specialty retailer, hosted an impactful beach cleanup at Pantai Remis in honour of World Cleanup Day 2023.

The community-driven event brought together a diverse group of more than 90 people, including MST’s brand partners, employees, family members and some suppliers.

“This day was testament to MST Golf’s commitment in creating a better environment, in line with our Proper Waste Management and Climate Change Resiliency sustainability indices,” said MST Group chief executive officer Ng Yap.

“A total weight of 299kg of waste was collected and removed from Pantai Remis, making for a cleaner shoreline and a healthier ecosystem,” he said.

Of the total collected, 186.7kg of recyclable waste consisted of plastic bottles, food containers, single-use plastic, food packaging, tins, Styrofoam, metals, cardboard, glass and other mixed wastes.

“It was heartwarming to see volunteers come together to preserve the environment and uplift sustainability matters, underscoring our efforts in driving positive change for a greener and more sustainable environment to live in,” said Ng.

He added that his excitement and pride was borne of the support that came from their many employees, brand partners and supplier.

“As an established golf specialty retailer, we understand the importance of exercising sustainability to deliver long-term value to our consumers and stakeholders.

“Aligning our retail operations with sustainable strategies is crucial for the longevity of our business, and we are fully committed to that cause.

“As part of the golf ecosystem, we are determined to explore multiple avenues to drive sustainability and foster a culture of better business, better environment and better people within our company.”

The beach cleanup was co-organised between MST Golf and Sustainability Solutions, while Purple Galaxy provided water refilling stations for the participants.

Employees from brand partners adidas, Amer Sports and UnderArmour took part in the event.

Ng said MST aims to cultivate a proactive attitude among employees towards implementing sustainable practices at home or at work.

In 2021, the company launched its Care Green initiative, focusing on the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, rolled out across its outlets in Malaysia and Singapore.

The initiative includes the use of recyclable paper bags for customers, recycle bins at MST Golf outlets to encourage the habit of recycling, reusing packaging material and reducing single use materials.
