Perodua Amateur Series national final in sight

THE Perodua National Amateur Golf Series has conducted nine state qualifiers in this year’s championship, with another four to come before the national final.

With 45 of finalists now confirmed, the remaining 20 will be drawn from qualifying rounds in Penang, Perak, Sarawak and Sabah, scheduled for September and early October, with the national final set for Els Club Teluk Datai in Langkawi from Oct 22 to 24 Oct.

Five medal winners in five categories, with handicaps ranging from 0-25 will represent their states in Langkawi to determine the national champions, who will be rewarded with the Perodua Challenge Trophy.

The five medal winners at the national final will also represent Malaysia at the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) to be held at Laguna Phuket in Thailand from Nov 4 to 11, alongside players from 40 countries.

The World Amateur Golfers Championship, a long established international event, was inaugurated in 1995 and has served as a platform providing invaluable experience for amateur golfers to pit their skills against international players, while representing their countries.

“For more than two decades now the World Amateur Golfers Championship has not only inspired amateur players around the globe to play better, but also actively encourage participation in hosting a world-class tournament, on rotation, “ said Lokman Ishak, organising chairman of the Perodua Series.

“The response here at home, to the state qualifiers has just been overwhelming,” he said.

“The national series is unique as it is the only competition is played all states, providing allowing amateurs to compete at national final and the opportunity to wear Malaysian colours at the World Amateur Golfers Championship, which is expected to bring together 500 golfers this year.”

He added that there are still slots available for entry at the four remaining qualifiers, for players to try their luck before the national final.
