Malaysian Alyaa on track to earn LPGA Tour card

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian golfer Alyaa Abdulghany has passed the opening test to earn a US LPGA Tour card for next season.

The 22-year-old battled to a final round of two-over 74 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, on Sunday, and it was enough for her to advance to Stage Two of the LPGA Qualifying School in two months time.

Alyaa finished the Stage One tying for 62nd in the 336-player field on two-over 288 total to be among the top 95 players who will see action next at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida from Oct 21-24.

Stage Two will only get tougher as the field is set to include some of the established players who have lost their card in the LPGA Tour and second-tier Symetra Tour this season.

Alyaa was delighted to have accomplished her first mission.

“I’m glad to clear Stage One of Q-School. I’ve come prepared for hot and windy conditions with grainy greens, thus glad to get the job done,” said Alyaa, last year’s US Women’s Amateur semi-finalist.

“Going into Stage Two, I know the field will be more competitive so I’ll need to take it one day at a time.”

Fellow Malaysian Loy Hee Ying failed to join Alyaa following a poor final round display.

The 24-year-old could only muster a 76 for 293 total and slipped from tied-80th to tied-106th, missing the cut by two strokes.

Hee Ying also failed in her previous bid two years ago.

The LPGA Tour Q-School is made up of three stages altogether.

The all-important final stage known as the Q-Series, to be played over a gruelling 144-hole contest, will be held at the Magnolia Grove (Dec 2-5) and Highland Oaks Golf Club (Dec 9-12) in Alabama.

LPGA Tour cards will be awarded to the top-45 and ties at the Q-Series.

Those who complete the Q-Series will be given Symetra Tour statues. RESULTS Leading final round scores
