THE MercedesTrophy, a series of qualifying rounds and national final that rewards its champion golfers with a slot in the regional final in Australia and ultimately a trip to Germany for the world final, was launched this week amid great anticipation of another outstanding event which will mark its 30th anniversary.

Speaking at the launch, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and chief executive officer Dr Claus Weidner said they were proud of the milestone that underscored the event as “Malaysia’s longest running corporate golf tournament.

“We love golf and are passionate about it, just as we are about perfection in the Mercedes-Benz brand, ” said Weidner.

“We believe in being the best. And as a result, both Mercedes-Benz and golf share a similar spirit in striving for the perfect drive.

“This strong connection between the game and our brand has led to the active involvement of Mercedes-Benz in this sport since 1989. And today, the MercedesTrophy has evolved into an extremely successful tournament series for amateurs, staged more than 60 countries – and we’re proud to host it for the 30th year in Malaysia, ” said Weidner, who added that the first qualifier would be held at the Penang Golf Club in Penang on March13.

“Mercedes-Benz’s involvement in golf is deep rooted and has now been established as an event that takes place on every continent. To date, over a million Mercedes-Benz customers and fans have teed off in the MercedesTrophy.

“This is testament to the overwhelming response received nationwide and this year the competition will again be played over five qualifying rounds, where the top-five winners of each qualifier will gain entry into the national final that will be held at Saujana Golf & Country Club in Subang on June 23, ” said Weidner.

The top-two in each of the three handicap categories for men and the winner of the ladies’ category will then qualify for the MercedesTrophy Regional Final Asia.

This will be an all-expenses paid trip in August.

From there, one Malaysian will be selected to be part of the Asian team at the MercedesTrophy World Final in Stuttgart, Germany – the birthplace of the automobile and Mercedes-Benz headquarters – in October 2020.

There is also incentive for the first player to achieve a hole-in-one on any of the two designated par-3s at each venue. That player will win the new Mercedes-Benz E 200 Avantgarde worth RM329,888.

Other prizes include exclusive Mercedes-Benz merchandises and novelty prizes from the marketing partners of the MercedesTrophy that include Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia, CrestLink, EPOS Watches, The Edge, TaylorMade Golf, the Saujana Hotel, Carlsberg and Kinslager.
