PETALING JAYA: Kuching City are hoping to turn up the heat in freezing South Korea as they seek their first win in the AFC Champions League Two against Gangwon today.

The Cats head into their third Group H match with one point from their opening two games, the same tally as their South Korean opponents, setting the stage for a crucial encounter at Gangneung Stadium.

Namibian midfielder Petrus Shitembi expects a tough test against a young and enthusiastic Gangwon side, but believes Kuching have every reason to be confident of causing an upset.

“We have a very interesting match ahead of us. We know what’s at stake against a very difficult side,” said the 34-year-old.

“They are a very young and enthusiastic team. We’re looking forward to it and hope to have an interesting game.”

Shitembi acknowledged that Gangwon could draw an advantage from playing at home, with their supporters expected to rally behind them, but stressed that Kuching also have plenty to fight for.

“We expect a tough game, but we have a lot to play for as well. We’re looking forward to causing an upset because we need to strengthen our position in the competition,” he said.

Head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak, meanwhile, said his players were adapting well to the cold weather and urged them to concentrate on their own performance rather than their opponents.

Aidil expects an open contest, with both teams needing a win to improve their standing in the group.

“We know how good our opponents are. They have a good style, but we are definitely going to fight for 90 minutes,” he said.

“We know they have the same result as us so far, but it’s going to be a different ballgame because both sides need the win.

“What we can do is to focus on our own game.

“The weather is also cold, but the boys are adapting well. Hopefully, we can put up a good fight.”

Kuching opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Cambodian side Phnom Penh Crown last month before earning a 1-1 draw against Hong Kong’s Kitchee two weeks ago.
