Kuching suffer Korean setback as wait for first ACL Two win continues

PETALING JAYA: Kuching City are still searching for their first win in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two after going down 1-0 to South Korea’s Gangwon at the Gangneung Stadium on Thursday (Oct 29).

The Cats are now bottom of Group H after three matches, with just one point after losing to Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown 2-1 two weeks ago and drawing 1-1 against Hong Kong’s Kitchee last month.

Kuching conceded the sole goal against the Korean League 1 squad in the 27th minute after Choe Byeong-chan gave the hosts the lead through an assist from Kang Joon-hyuck.

The Malaysian side tried their best to find an equaliser in the second half as head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak brought on Safawi Rasid, Cameroonian striker Jerome Etame, and Timor Leste’s Joao Pedro.

But hosts Gangwon held their ground to deny Kuching’s attempts as they held the lead to clinch their first win in the competition.

Kuching will get the chance to seek revenge on Gangwon when they host them at the Sarawak Stadium for the group stage fixture on Nov 5.

Kuching will then welcome Phnom Penh Crown on Nov 26, before their final group stage tie against Kitchee on Dec 3.
