Tierney believes Malaysia should have been in Asean Cup final

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s FIFA Asean Cup third-place playoff goal hero Fergus Tierney believes that Malaysia should have been in the final, given their strong performance in the tournament.

The Harimau Malaysia scored 10 goals and conceded none in four matches.

“We think we deserve to be in the final as we’ve shown with our performance that we’re more than good enough to be there,’’ said the 23-year-old, who came on as a substitute against Vietnam at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Monday and scored the winner with his first touch of the ball.

“Maybe things that are out of our control have affected us a little bit, but we’ve done the best we can.

“We controlled what we could and can be proud of ourselves. I hope the Malaysian people are proud as well,” he said.

Indonesia went on to win the inaugural edition of the tournament after winning 4-2 on penalties against Thailand after the match ended 2-2 after extra time.

Malaysia missed out on the final despite thrashing Singapore 6-0 in their final group stage match as Indonesia topped the group on goal difference after beating Bangladesh 9-2.
