Quentin ready to face familiar foe in showdown

PETALING JAYA: Playing against a teammate on the international stage can be daunting but national footballer Quentin Cheng (pic) is relishing the prospect.

Quentin is expected to line up again against Singapore in the final Group A match of the FIFA Asean Cup at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung today.

The 27-year-old Selangor defender started in the 0-0 draw against Indonesia on Monday and in the 3-0 win over Bangladesh last week.

Quentin will come up against a familiar face in Selangor vice-captain Safuwan Baharuddin against the Lions but he knows what to expect.

“There is always banter between us, but so far we have not spoken much to each other prior to the game,” said Quentin.

“I’m sure after the game there will be a lot of bragging rights.

“It’s always exciting to play a derby, especially against Singapore, with a spot in the final on the line. I’m sure it will be a tough and competitive game.”

Quentin is also pleased with his own showing so far, having kept two clean sheets in as many games, and he singled out right winger Arif Aiman Hanapi as a key partner on the flank.

“I’m very happy – two games, two clean sheets so far. I think the whole back four has worked together as a unit, and hopefully we can continue this momentum.

“It’s a lot of fun (playing with Arif). He’s an amazing player and makes my job a lot easier. I think we have a good understanding of each other and complement one another well.”

Malaysia must win to keep their hopes of a place in the final alive.
