PETALING JAYA: Bergson da Silva, who was only cleared to don the Malaysian football team colours less than two weeks ago, made a dream start with the Harimau Malaya in the FIFA Asean Cup yesterday.
The 35-year-old Brazilian-born forward delivered the final blow to Bangladesh in Malaysia’s 3-0 win in their opening match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Da Silva said scoring on his debut was something he never expected.
“I never imagined to be here. When I entered the pitch and shared those moments with my teammates, it’s a reason to feel proud and happy,” said the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) star.
“I would like to think that everyone who supports me feels the same way.
“Sharing moments and making memories with my teammates are priceless.”
Da Silva found the back of the net in the second half after winger Arif Aiman Hanapi scored a brace in the opening 45 minutes.
He said getting the three points is crucial as they prepare to take on hosts and rivals Indonesia next on Monday before facing Singapore on Thursday.
“The three points are important and we have to keep doing this as we look forward to two more tough matches.
“We know what we can do, and we are proud to represent Malaysia,” he said.
Alongside Da Silva, his Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) teammates Manuel Hidalgo and Brad Tapp also made their debuts for Malaysia.
Meanwhile, interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe said the win and Da Silva’s debut goal will serve as a morale booster ahead of their clash against Indonesia.
“I have to congratulate Bergson. He came in and scored; that’s a motivation and confidence booster for the team,” said Cheng Hoe.
“I hope they can maintain their performance against Indonesia. It was a tough first game for us, but it’s good to get the winning momentum.”
