PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Football League (MFL) president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan and Selangor Football Association deputy president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar will go head-to-head for the president’s post in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
Ghani brings years of experience in league operations and commercial management from his time at the helm of the MFL.
Shahril, a prominent corporate figure, is known for his background in governance and executive leadership across public transport and sports administration.
Shahril has called for a change.
"I hope that all the voting members to really look into transforming FAM and Malaysian football," he said.
"Malaysian football at the moment is, I would say, at one of their lowest points, so we cannot maintain the status quo. This is the opportunity for us to make a major change."
"There’s a lot of improvement needed when it comes to governance in all aspects of Malaysian football," he said.
He also touched on the heritage players issue, where seven players were suspended by FIFA for falsified documents, noting that the findings of the Integrity Commission’s report should not be left to gather dust.
Ghani said his nomination was not about position or status but about the trust placed in him to help steer Malaysian football forward.
"I see there is still much room for improvement, particularly in governance, football development, competition management, and ensuring the interests of all stakeholders in the national football ecosystem are given attention," he said.
