KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s naturalised striker Paolo Josue scored a dramatic injury time winner as Kuala Lumpur edged Brunei 1-0 for the City Boys’ first win in the Super League yesterday.
It was the timeliest of strikes as KL were down to 10 men after midfielder Gary Steven Robbat was sent off during stoppage time at the Cheras Football Stadium.
Brunei had looked the more dangerous side in the first half when Finnish midfielder Andres Felipe Aspergen saw his shot inside the box hit the crossbar in the 21st minute.
In the 36th minute, Josue attempted a long-range shot which went just inches off the bar.
The hosts were almost punished just before the breather when KL goalkeeper Ameerul Eqhwan Fauzi collided with centreback Giancarlo Gallifuoco, dropping the ball for Brunei’s Danial Asri to have a clear shot.
Fortunately, midfielder D. Kenny Pallraj came to KL’s rescue by clearing the attempt off the line.
Brunei had another good chance at the start of the second half when captain and midfielder Azwan Ali Rahman’s free-kick found Ghanaian defender Ebenezer Abban, but his header went just over the bar.
There was also drama at the touchline when Brunei coach James McAllister was sent off for remonstrating with the fourth official in the 52nd minute.
Meanwhile, Kuching City thrashed Kelantan 5-0 at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru.
Cameroonian striker Jerome Mpacko Etame continued his superb goalscoring form with a hattrick in the seventh, ninth and 54th minutes.
Winger Safawi Rasid was also on target in the 42nd and 56th minutes.
