PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim captain Afiq Fazail bagged both the Most Valuable Player and Best Midfielder accolades at the Malaysian Football League Awards on Wednesday (Aug 12).
The 31-year-old was honoured for his top performances in the middle of the park for the Southern Tigers as he helped them win the Super League, Malaysia Cup and Charity Shield last season.
"I'm grateful for this award and want to thank the Crown Prince (Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim), players, coaches and my loved ones," he said in his short speech at Angkasapuri in Kuala Lumpur.
JDT’s Brazilian striker Bergson Da Silva also took home two gongs - Super League Top Scorer (27 goals) and Best Foreign Player - to assert his dominance as one of the best strikers Malaysian football has ever seen.
He is now the first player to win the award for the fourth time in a row (2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025), beating the previous record held by former Kedah and Armed Forces striker Marlon Alex James, who won it three straight times (2006, 2007 and 2008).
Besides Bergson, the other JDT player who picked up an accolade was Ahmad Syihan Hazmi (Best Goalkeeper). JDT Coach Xisco Munoz also received the Best Coach award.
Selangor had two winners with captain Faisal Halim bagging the Best Striker award while Quentin Cheng lifted the Best Defender prize.
