PETALING JAYA: Interim national football team coach Tan Cheng Hoe (pic) has reminded his players to expect an intense battle with the Philippines in their final Group B match of the AFF Hyundai Cup today.
Home tickets for Malaysia’s do-or-die match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium today have been sold out yesterday, ensuring a full house for the hosts.
And Cheng Hoe said the familiarity between the two Southeast Asian sides could result in a clash with little to separate them but the home crowd support could make a difference.
“As a coach or player, we want to see that type of atmosphere at the stadium.
“Support from the ‘12th player’ will give us extra motivation,’’ said Cheng Hoe at the pre-match press conference yesterday.
“But I hope the players won’t let the pressure of having to win the game get to them.
“The expectations will be high, so the players’ focus must be from start to finish.
“We must make full use of the advantage of playing at home, and hopefully the players are mentally and physically well prepared.”
Malaysia’s 4-0 win against Laos last month also saw the stadium in Cheras filled with home supporters.
Before beating Laos, Malaysia won their opening group stage tie 2-1 against Myanmar, but suffered a 2-0 loss against Thailand last Saturday.
Malaysia are currently tied with Myanmar on six points in second place, but Myanmar face group toppers Thailand today, who have a perfect run of three wins so far.
The Philippines are in fourth place in the five-team group with one win from three games. That makes them a desperate side going all out for a win against Malaysia with a semi-final spot at stake.
