AFF Cup: Harimau Malaya suffer first defeat to Thailand 2-0

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia suffered their first defeat in the Hyundai AFF Cup after going down 2-0 to Thailand in a Group B match at the Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday (Aug 1).

Harimau Malaya conceded to Thailand in the first half when the hosts were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute and it was calmly converted by Yotsakorn Burapha.

Thailand extended their lead in the second half when Teerasak Poeiphimai blasted the ball over Malaysian goalkeeper Azri Ghani in the 56th minute.

Harimau Malaya had defeated Myanmar 2-1 and Laos 4-0 in their opening group matches earlier.

Malaysia dropped to the second spot in Group B on six points, with Thailand leading on goal difference despite having a game in hand.

Tan Cheng Hoe’s men will play their final group stage tie against the Philippines on Aug 8 at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.

The top two teams in the group will advance to the semi-finals.
