Impressive feat: Akhyar Rashid (centre) has played 155 games, scoring 30 goals and making 24 assists so far in his professional club career.

PETALING JAYA: Much sought-after national winger Akhyar Rashid has raised eyebrows by joining Negri Sembilan in a surprise season-long loan move from Terengganu.

The 27-year-old had been strongly linked with a switch to Star City.

Akhyar, however, opted to join the Deers’ project, which has focused on building a young squad for the future.

“I hope my arrival will bring some positivity to the club,” he said in a short statement.

According to the club, Akhyar completed his move to Negri on Thursday.

He also revealed his reason for choosing Negri.

“I wanted a change after two seasons in Terengganu. Plus, I feel the club are headed in the right direction and are performing well in terms of growth every season.

“I hope with my upcoming appearances with the team, I can give my best, and everyone can back this team all the way.

‘’As I said, the aim is to bring a positive environment to the squad.’’

So far in his professional club career, Akhyar has played 155 games, scoring 30 goals and making 24 assists.

During his time with Johor Darul Ta’zim from 2019 to 2024, he won five Super League titles, three Malaysia Cups and two FA Cups.

Predominantly deployed on the left wing, Akhyar is also capable of operating effectively on the right flank, giving the club added tactical flexibility in attack.

The winger has made 51 appearances for the national team, scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists for Harimau Malaya.

His pace, agility and eye for goal are expected to strengthen Negri’s attacking options for the upcoming season.
