From KL to Kuching, Safawi eyes fresh start

Safawi Rasid

PETALING JAYA: National winger Safawi Rasid has put an end to speculation over his future after joining Kuching City for the upcoming season.

The 29-year-old, on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), makes the move to Borneo after spending a season with Kuala Lumpur, where he played an important role in helping the team finish fourth in the Super League.

The addition of Safawi to the Cats’ lineup will certainly help head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak bolster the team’s attacking options, with the versatile Safawi able to play as an attacking midfielder.

The Terengganu-born player thanked his former club for a splendid season as he bid farewell.

"Every ending marks a new beginning. I’m grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the journey. I wish the team nothing but success ahead.

"Time for a new chapter," said Safawi.

The Cats have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Japanese defensive midfielder Kaishu Yamazaki.

Yamazaki, 28, brings valuable regional experience, having won the Singapore Premier League title with the Lion City Sailors in 2021 during his stint in Singapore.

The Cats are preparing for a busy season ahead as they will compete in the Super League, AFC Champions League Two, and the Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup, and players with knowledge of the continental competition will be useful for Aidil.

At the back, Kuching have signed former Melaka centreback Irfan Zakaria to reinforce their defence.

Kuching had earlier announced the arrival of Australian forward Dylan Wenzel-Halls, who heads to the team after spending two seasons with Penang.
