PETALING JAYA: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard hopes to showcase his drive to compete when the AllStar Legends match takes place at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Oct 3.
The English football icon was in town yesterday to announce the exhibition match featuring some of football’s most iconic stars as the AllStar Premier Legends take on the AllStar World Legends. Some of the names who are set to feature in the match include former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen, and ex-Leeds defender Ian Harte.
They will be joined by former AC Milan goalkeeper Dida, ex-Barcelona striker Javier Saviola, and former Inter Milan defender Maicon.
Gerrard said his appearance in the games remains unclear, but his hunger to compete still remains the same after stepping away from the sport professionally 10 years ago.
“It’s a fantastic event and I’m hoping to be available and be a part of it,” said Gerrard at the event’s press conference yesterday.
“As an ex-athlete, whatever I’m doing, I always want to win. That drive comes from within, and for any athlete, they need to have that passion and sacrifice from within to be on the winning side.”
Gerrard, who made over 700 appearances and scored 186 goals for Liverpool, added that the hunger never goes away, and fans can expect the same when former footballing legends take to the pitch in October.
“If you’ve been an athlete at the highest level, that hunger never goes away. Even if it’s friendly, that friendliness stops for 90 minutes.
“I’ve been retired for 10 years now, but I love being back on the pitch.
“In March, I played at Anfield for a local charity game, and I played for 85 minutes, which I was proud of. These are the types of events I look forward to now,” said the 45-year-old.
