Rajan takes interim charge at Negri after Nidzam steps down

PETALING JAYA: Negri Sembilan have been plunged into further uncertainty after head coach Nidzam Jamil tendered his resignation following a string of disappointing results in the Super League.

The club confirmed on Monday that they had received Nidzam’s resignation letter, with the decision taking immediate effect.

“Negri Sembilan have received Nidzam’s resignation letter as head coach effective immediately,” the club said in a statement.

“The club would like to thank Nidzam for all the efforts and contributions he has given since his arrival at the start of the season.”

Assistant coach K. Rajan (pic) has been appointed interim head coach and will take charge of the squad for the remainder of the campaign.

“The club and coaching staff’s main focus at this moment is to restore stability as well as player morale as we fight for the remainder of the season,” the statement added.

Nidzam’s departure comes on the back of the Deer’s fourth consecutive league defeat – a 2-1 loss to Immigration on Saturday.

Negri have not recorded a win since their 2-0 victory over Kelantan in December and were recently eliminated from the Malaysia Cup after suffering a heavy 6-1 aggregate defeat to Selangor in the quarter-finals.

Negri are currently ninth in the league with 17 points from 16 matches.

When approached for comment, Nidzam declined to elaborate on the reasons behind his decision.

His resignation comes just weeks after Negri chief executive officer Faliq Firdaus publicly expressed his reluctance to make a change in the dug-out.

“Regarding the suggestion to change the head coach, I personally disagree because it will not solve the problems in the short term. Furthermore, the new 2026-2027 season is not far off – only about five months from now,” said Faliq three weeks ago.

“In fact, the proposal to recruit a foreign coach is also not an easy task, as it involves high costs, particularly concerning salaries.

“There are many factors that need to be taken into account, especially regarding the players.

“Negri are not an elite club like those in Europe.”

With the season entering its decisive phase, Negri now face the immediate task of steadying the ship under Rajan as they attempt to halt their slide and rebuild confidence within the squad.
