KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia coach Peter Cklamovski has moved to clarify his recent comments that stirred debate among fans and officials, insisting that his focus remains firmly on football and the continued growth of the national team.
Addressing the media ahead of Malaysia’s next international fixture against Laos in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 third-round qualifiers, the Australian coach reiterated that the ongoing FIFA sanctions against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven heritage players were 'completely outside' his control and not something the team would want to dwell on.
"We understand there’s been a lot of noise around the situation, but it’s completely outside our control," said Cklamovski.
"It has nothing to do with the national team’s work. Inside our camp, we haven’t focused on it at all. Our focus remains on football, on what we can control."
Cklamovski also addressed suggestions that his previous statements had been critical of FAM, making it clear that his words were misunderstood.
"If people think my comments were disrespectful to FAM, that was never my intention," he explained.
"I was only referring to what was already publicly stated by FAM themselves. If anyone felt disrespected, I sincerely apologise."
On their closed door training during the current international window, Cklamovski said: "It’s not about avoiding the media; it’s about staying locked in on what truly matters, winning matches," he said.
"We respect the media and the fans, and once this situation settles, there’ll be more opportunities for access."
Despite the surrounding controversy, the coach ended with a rallying message to fans, urging unity and belief in the team.
"I’m not here to make friends - I’m here to build Malaysian football.
"My message to the fans is simple a support the players. Come to Bukit Jalil, fill the stands, and show your belief. We want to make the nation proud and inspire every kid to dream of playing for Malaysia one day."
