PETALING JAYA: Selangor sealed their quarter-finals spot in the FA Cup football competition in ruthless style by crushing A1 Semi-Pro League side Malaysian Universities 9-0 in the second leg of their last-16 match at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday (Sept 13).
The Red Giants advanced 12-1 on aggregate after a somewhat lacklustre 3-1 win in the first leg.
They made up for that with a ruthless attacking display which delighted their fans.
Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes stole the show with a superb hattrick, netting in the 45th, 75th and 80th minutes.
Thai wingback Kevin Deeromram also shone, striking twice in the 11th and 49th minutes.
Further goals came from Quentin Cheng (22nd), Alvin Fortes (55th), Zach Clough (69th) and Ahmad Zikri Khalili (90th), completing the rout.
With the domestic job done, Selangor will now switch their focus to the continental stage when they face Thailand’s Bangkok United in their AFC Champions League Two group clash at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Sept 18.
In another round of 16 match, Terengganu produced a commanding response to their first-leg setback, sweeping aside Immigration 3-0 in the return fixture at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak on Saturday to book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
The Turtles, who trailed 2-1 after the opening leg at Batu Kawan on Aug 17, overturned the deficit in emphatic fashion to progress 4-2 on aggregate.
Cameroonian winger Junior Ngong Sam opened the scoring in the 18th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Immigration goalkeeper Zarif Irfan Hashimuddin failed to hold a long-range effort from Nurillo Tukhtasinov.
Star winger Akhyar Rashid then underlined his reputation as one of Malaysia's most dangerous wide men with a dazzling solo strike in the 32nd minute.
The 26-year-old skipped past a defender with a clever feint, weaved into the box, and wrong-footed three defenders with a cheekily placed shot past Zarif with aplomb.
Akhyar doubled his tally in the 51st minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot to seal victory for the East Coast side.
Terengganu will next take on Melaka in the Super League at the Sultan Mizan Stadium on Sept 19, while Immigration will take on Negri Sembilan at the Batu Kawan Stadium on Sept 20.
