Stuart to stay with Sabah despite solid offers to play abroad

PETALING JAYA: It is a big relief for Sabah as Stuart Wilkin (pic) has decided to stay at home despite good options to play abroad.

The 27-year-old Malaysian international was on the radar of several Thai League One clubs, including Chonburi and Kanchanaburi Power, fuelling speculation of a big move overseas.

But Stuart, born in Woking, England, with family roots in Bentong, Pahang, has chosen to represent Sabah again in the Super League starting next month.

“Sabah feels like home to me – the place, the people, the club,” said Stuart, who enters his fourth season with the east Malaysian side.

“The club’s ambition still aligns with mine, which is to be competitive at the top end of the table.

“The squad remain strong, so it felt right to stay.”

Last season, Stuart played 28 matches in all competitions, registering six goals and six assists – a solid return for a box-to-box midfielder known for his relentless energy, vision, and leadership.

“The new players have settled in well. We’ve got a good mix – some who’ve been here for years, experienced heads, talented youngsters, and high-quality new signings,” said Stuart.

“Hopefully we can get more pre-season fixtures lined up. That’ll help us build chemistry and sharpen up before the season kicks off.”

Stuart is particularly excited about the depth in midfield this season.

With the arrival of Dean Pelekanos from Australia’s A-League and the retention of veterans like Gary Steven Robbat and Miguel Cifuentes, competition for a starting spot will be fierce but Stuart welcomes it.

“It’s a great group. There’s healthy competition, and that pushes everyone to improve. Dean’s a great addition, and Gary and Cifu bring loads of experience. Then you’ve got some promising young Sabahan boys – it’s a balanced unit.”

“In the past, I was the younger player learning from the older ones. Now it’s my turn to give back – to guide the younger lads and share what I’ve learned over the years.

“They’re eager to learn. With the right support and push, we can help them develop and contribute meaningfully to the team’s success.”

There is one ambition Wilkin has not ticked off yet at Sabah and that is reaching a Cup final.

“Since I joined, we haven’t reached a final. I’d love for this to be the year we break that barrier. We’ve got the players. We’ve got the belief. Now it’s about turning that into results.”
