PETALING JAYA: The national women’s football team were all smiles after winning their second group stage match as they defeated hosts Tajikistan 1-0 at the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers on Wednesday (July 2).
The team's late goal courtesy of Henrietta Justine in injury time was enough to see the team stay in contention for a spot in the Asian Cup next year in Australia, as they are now level on six points with North Korea in Group H.
The 22-year-old Henrietta’s goal came after she converted a perfect cross from Intan Sarah Anisah Zulgafli in the first minute of added time at the Pamir Central Stadium in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
It was a similar finish for the Malayan Tigress as their opening group stage fixture against Palestine where they won 1-0, thanks to a late foal from Farahiyah Ridzuan in the 85th minute.
Head coach Joel Cornelli was delighted with the win, as it meant the team would be heading into their final game against North Korea with full confidence.
"I’m very happy to get two wins so far. It’s very important for our confidence and the belief that the players have in themselves," he said.
But North Korea won’t be easy as the 2023 Asian Games silver medallists have 20 goals so far in the qualifiers, scoring 10 goals each in their matches against Tajikistan and Palestine.
"Playing against North Korea will be a completely different affair. They are on another level and have scored 20 goals in two games so far.
"We will have to make something out of it, as we need to be more consistent in defense. Both teams are equal on points, so anything can happen," said Cornelli.
It will be an uphill task for the 102-ranked Malayan Tigress against world No. 9 North Korea on Saturday, with the winners booking their ticket to the Asian Cup next year.
