PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Cup runners-up Pahang are likely to pull out from the Super League next season - adding more misery to a beleaguered domestic football scene.
They are set to join Perak, who became the first team to exit the league next season due to unpaid salary issues.
Though Pahang have yet to make an official announcement on their status with the club licensing deadline on Saturday (May 10), several players have gone on social media to thank the club.
According to sources close to the club, the team coordinator informed the players that the team could be closing down and asked them to look for new clubs in the upcoming season.
At first, it was reported that only team owner Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah would step down but it is learnt now that the club too will leave the domestic scene.
This season, the side coached by Singaporean legend Fandi Ahmad finished eighth in the league and lost to JDT 1-2 in the Malaysia Cup final last month.
The team, which were established in 1959, have been one of the biggest teams in the local landscape.
The Elephants have won the Division One title four times (1987, 1992, 1995 and 199) and Super League in 2004.
They have also won the Malaysia Cup four times (1983, 1992, 2013 and 2014) and the FA Cup three times (2006, 2014, and 2018).
