PETALING JAYA: Pahang captain and Argentine midfielder Stefano Brundo is hopeful that his team will secure their place in the Super League.
Following their heartbreaking 1-2 loss to Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Malaysia Cup final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday, players have been left in the lurch, with no updates from the management regarding the team’s future.
As uncertainty engulfs the club, particularly with owner Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah revealing that he would step down next season, there were concerns about whether the team will be sold or face disbandment.
Brundo, 31, believes that the Elephants represent a vital part of Malaysian football and should continue to fight for their legacy.
“The Malaysia Cup final should serve as a powerful reminder of the significance of this club in the sport,” Brundo said.
“We want to stay in the league, but it ultimately depends on the management’s decision. My hope is that this club remain intact and battle on, just as we did during the final.”
Bruno also highlighted the passionate support from fans, saying: “Despite the loss, the determination we showed resonated deeply with our supporters. ‘’Many travelled from Pahang, some even faced financial struggles, yet they still bought tickets to cheer us on. Their unwavering support is a testament to how much this club mean to the community.”
Joining Pahang in 2023 marked Brundo’s first venture into Malaysian football after a career across several clubs in South America.
He admitted he knew little about Malaysia or Asia before arriving but has since developed a deep affection for his new home.
“I had no idea what to expect when I arrived in Malaysia, but I have been incredibly impressed by the people, the clubs, and the vibrant atmosphere here,” he expressed.
“I love this place, and I am truly grateful to everyone who has made my experience so wonderful. For now, I need to focus on my club commitments, so I prefer not to discuss my future too much. It’s time for me to rest and recharge.”
