PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysia Under-23 player T. Saravanan is making a good case that he could be the finisher that Pahang need in the Malaysia Cup final against Johor Darul Ta’zim on April 26.
The 24-year-old winger came off the bench to score the Elephants’ winner in their 1-0 win over Perak at the Manjung Stadium on Saturday.
The 83rd minute goal showcased both his flair and intelligence.
Saravanan started a move from midfield with a surging run before playing the ball out wide to winger Baqiuddin Shamsuddin.
Baqiuddin followed with a precise cutback which Saravanan met and finished with composure.
The goal had the Pahang fans cheering loudly. Saravanan had also impressed in Pahang’s 6-0 demolition of Kedah the week before, where he also got on the scoresheet and provided an assist.
That, however, was the only match he had played the full 90 minutes, as his 10 other appearances have been as a substitute.
But many of the fans, after seeing his last two inspired displays, are wondering why he is not used more often as a regular – thus strengthening his chances of a start in the Malaysia Cup final.
Saravanan has good reasons to be optimistic he could be given a starting role soon.
“Two games, two goals – it feels good, and I know it strengthens my chances of a starting spot in the Malaysia Cup final,” said Saravanan.
“Against Kedah, I showed I could beat many players with my dribbling before scoring.
“But the goal against Perak was more direct, but that’s my style – to initiate attacks, link up with teammates, and look for the shot.
“Now, I just have to keep going and finish strong in our last league match against Penang (Temerloh Stadium on April 19).”
