PETALING JAYA: The role of Syamer Kutty Abba (pic) could change in the national team but he is ready to assume it.
Syamer usually does the ‘’dirty job’’ in midfield but based on the last four training sessions, he could be playing as a centreback this time.
The national team are preparing for the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Nepal at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday.
The Penangite has been the main defensive midfielder on the international stage, having made 42 appearances for Harimau Malaya.
The 27-year-old said he was prepared to play any role for Malaysia as long as it fitted coach Peter Cklamovski’s plan.
“There might be a change. I have been playing in two to three positions since I started my career. This gives the coach options when it comes to his planning for the game,” said Syamer.
“I’ve been used as a midfielder and centreback during sessions, so I’m just working hard to get into the first eleven.
Being a centreback will be a whole new challenge but Syamer is banking on his defensive prowess to contribute for the team.
Syamer is relishing the challenge of meeting the high standard set by Cklamovski in training.
“Every coach is different. Coach Cklamovski’s standard is high, and we feel it,” added Syameer, who is on-loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).
“My experience with JDT will help. They are an exemplary club and had prepared me to be who I am today. With Penang, I’ve been getting a lot of minutes and I’m more confident now,” he added.
