PETALING JAYA: In today’s modern game of football, young Selangor defender Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar (pic) does not appear like the standard centreback.
Standing only 1.8m (5’9’’), the 22-year-old isn’t quite an imposing presence but he possesses an impressive skill set that has taken him far with the Red Giants this season.
Harith’s consistently impressive displays have earned him a spot in national coach Peter Cklamovski’s Harimau Malaya side preparing for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against Nepal at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on March 25.
Having featured in 29 games for Selangor in all competitions, Harith has caught the Australian’s eye with his superb reading of the game, speedy interventions and fearless tackling.
There are other plus points. Harith has shown an eye for goals too, having scored four times including a brace in his last Super League game for Selangor where they crushed Kedah 7-0.
Always a danger at set-pieces, Harith is also ready to step into leadership roles and was made captain for two AFC Champions League (ACL) Two matches.
As talk is rife that he could see action against Nepal, Harith expressed his delight over that prospect.
“I’m grateful to be picked by the new coach and hope to play a strong part in our progress as a team,” said Harith, who has won six caps with Malaysia, scoring one goal.
“What I’ve done for my club, I intend to do for the country as well.’’
Harith, however, has his work cut out in contending for the centreback spot as he has seasoned campaigners Shahrul Saad and Matthew Davies, and another promising young defender Safwan Mazlan for company.
Then there is also Dion Cools, the ever reliable rightback who plies his trade in the Thai League for Buriram United.
