PETALING JAYA: The selection of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) players – winger Mohamadou Sumareh and midfielder Natxo Insa – for national team’s centralised training has raised eyebrows.

Coach Peter Cklamovski, however, is standing by his decision.

Sumareh and Natxo are part of the 27-man team selected for training ahead of the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers against Nepal at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on March 25.

All reported for training yesterday.

Critics claim that Natxo is too old for the team as he is turning 39 this year, while Sumareh has not been getting regular minutes with his club.

The Australian defended his decision although there are other top-performing players in the Super League.

“Natxo’s physical data showed that he has produced strong performances. It is connected to good football that shows he can play,” said Cklamovski.

“I’ve selected Malaysian players who are the right fit for my football. They are attacking players, aggressive, and have shown that they have good ball possession and can score as many goals as possible.

“We want to be strong defensively as well. Natxo is in good form and shows hunger. He has a strong mindset as well.

“As for Mo (Sumareh), I made the call based on the profile of the player and how his characteristics would fit us. He can bring something different to the squad. It is an opportunity for him to put his best foot forward.

“If he was in another club, he could have had more minutes but in JDT, there is competition. I believe in what he brings to the table for the team.”

Meanwhile, striker Paulo Josue said he was looking to start under Cklamovski.

“Different mindset, style and coaching staff. It is going to be a great challenge and I hope everyone will understand his style of coaching.”
